Rehabilitation Program

What Makes Us Special

The Boston Home has an on-site Rehab suite featuring specialized exercise machines. The Boston Home’s licensed specialists provide an ongoing continuum of care for our residents, working with and reporting to our Director of Rehabilitation Services, Alex Burnham. They establish a comprehensive plan for each resident’s physical, occupational, and speech therapy needs.

Services include:

  • physical therapy
  • occupational therapy
  • speech therapy
  • wheelchair/seating assessment
  • VitalStim neuromuscular electrical stimulation for swallowing
  • augmentative and alternative communication device assessments (Tobii, DynaVox, tablet devices including iPads, etc.)

Our partnership builds on a relationship with Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital physiatrist Dr. Stephen F. Koelbel. He is well-acquainted with residents through the Spasticity Clinic he established and runs biweekly at The Boston Home.

According to our Rehabilitation Services Director Alex Burnham, “Physical, occupational and speech therapy staff and aides are on site all day, which makes it easy to develop personalized plans for our residents and track results. We coordinate and follow up with the nursing staff to get feedback and observe residents in the context of their daily environment. We can then evaluate the therapy plans and adjust accordingly. It’s all part of the overall commitment to give residents the most independence with the highest level of functioning.”

In addition to residents and day program participants, individuals living in the community with similar medical conditions come to The Boston Home for specialized rehabilitation services.
